Our Compaq CQ61 Review

Compaq CQ61 Laptop

Part of Compaqís Presario lineup, the CQ61 really isnít bad for the price (usually somewhere around £500, depending on who youíre buying from). It packs the same power you might expect to find in more expensive laptops without breaking the bank.

How a laptop looks isnít the most important aspect, but it is a factor in making a purchase, so letís get it out of the way. Itís not the prettiest laptop in the world, but itís not bad looking, with matte black and silver interior and piano black casing stamped with the ďQĒ Compaq logo. It wonít blow you away in terms of visual presentation, but you wonít be embarrassed to be seen carrying it around, either.

Next up: How does it handle?

Well, the Compaq CQ61 has the same beautifully silky little touchpad youíll find on the premium HPs and a nice size keyboard. However, thereís a hot-air vent right on the left hand side, so if youíre left handed and plan on using an external mouse, that might be a bit of an annoyance (unless itís winter... or youíre bowling, and you could use a hand warmer). If youíre a right-hander, itís no big deal, of course.

The display is a nice big 15.6 inches with a resolution of 1366 by 768, which really isnít bad for this price range. This makes it more than perfect for watching movies on an airplane (okay, in the bathroom). There are three USB ports, which is about standard, as well as an SD/MS/MMC/xD card reader, and, if youíre ever stuck in a rural area with no real internet, thereís a 56kbps modem... yeah, weíre not sure what these things are for anymore, either.

Truth be told, the features in this regard are pretty standard, but oddly missing a few pieces. No gigabit Ethernet or even Bluetooth, for instance. However, you do get 802.11g WiFi, so itís not completely out of the running on this front, and you do get an HDMI port, making it a great multimedia rig.

In terms of performance, itís really not bad. A bare minimum of two and a half hours of battery life for two gigs of RAM, an Intel Celeron 900 at 2.2GHz, and a two hundred fifty gig hard drive with Windows Vista Home Premium. Not bad, not bad at all.

So... whatís the bottom line? Well, itís surprisingly powerful for its price range, but the fact that itís ďalmostĒ a premium laptop... may leave you just wondering where your REAL premium laptop is. It feels a little bit too much like the developers went in knowing that they were making a B+ computer, so rather than making a really great budget notebook, they made a mediocre premium notebook at budget price... Still, a handy little rig, but you may want to just buy a true Mini for a couple hundred dollars less, or a true premium laptop for a couple hundred more, because truthfully, this one is good, but itís neither here nor there.
