Our Dell Mini 1012 Review

Promoted as the new face for high definition movies, the Dell Mini 1012 wooed us from the first look with its sleek design. We were glad to explore the finishing marks on the Dell Mini 1012, as its curves are those of a high-end model with a much higher price tag. The Dell Mini 1012’s affordable price, however; did not result in a compromise in the portability department. Carrying the Dell Mini 1012 is a enjoyable experience, though it does not exceed that of other lightweight netbooks available in the market.

The Dell Mini 1012’s 10-inch TFT screen comes HD ready with a high pixel resolution. This of course translated to hours of movie watching at the office as we tested this brand new netbook.

While we definitely enjoyed the high definition, we were a bit disappointed with the contrast levels. Dell Mini 1012 could’ve been much better with a higher contrast setting.

In terms of brightness, we are glad to report that the Dell Mini 1012 is an ideal companion for outdoor trips. The reflective screen fares well in direct sunlight and in shade. However, we don’t see the Dell Mini 1012 as a portable movie theatre for friends out on a trip. The viewing angles are agreeable, but the brightness decreases sharply for many of those sitting at either sides of the netbook.

Keypad and Trackpad

The Dell Mini 1012’s keypad is distinct with its design. We were pleasantly surprised with its accuracy and ease for typing rapid instant messages. The keys offer great feedback with little pressure or stress. The trackpad is a vast improvement from previous netbook models. We loved the surface area of the trackpad as it provides ample space for scrolling and moving. One problem we came across was with the trackpad’s buttons as they are modest in size and can be often missed or clicked by accident.

Performance and Battery Life

Built for optimum HD performance, the Dell Mini 1012 is a winner in our performance tests. This sleek, portable netbook is powered by an Atom processor to facilitate movie viewing without any lagging.

In our first performance test, we subjected the Dell Mini 1012 to an HD movie playback and web surfing load. The Dell Mini 1012 not only excelled in the test, but also exceeded our expectations in terms of battery consumption and system performance.

Our usability tests showed us that the Dell Mini 1012 is not your average netbook. We did not experience any screen freezes, lags, or sudden restarts.

In terms of connectivity, we found the Dell Mini 1012 to be quite average without an HDMI port. The Dell Mini 1012 comes equipped with two USB ports and multi-memory card reader. The absence of an HDMI port is quite baffling given that this netbook is promoted as the ultimate HD movie player. Many users will miss being able to hook up the Dell Mini 1012 to their TV set.

What We Liked

We liked the Dell Mini 1012’s playback performance, storage space, and spacious trackpad.

What We Disliked

We disliked the Dell Mini 1012’s lack of an HDMI port and small trackpad buttons.

Our Final Verdict

We found the Dell Mini 1012 to be a steal-of-a-deal with its HD ready performance. A user looking to view movies and documentaries will love the Dell Mini 1012. As a netbook, the Dell Mini 1012 doesn’t really stand out with its other features. Users looking for a gaming netbook will definitely need to steer clear from the Dell Mini 1012. Overall, we recommend the Dell Mini 1012 to those looking to web surf, watch movies, and perform general daily tasks of typing and email processing.
